    On Tuesday 9 April, Barclays’ Group Chief Executive Jes Staley, along with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and others, celebrated the grand opening of the Newark, NJ location of Per Scholas, a national nonprofit organisation Barclays has supported since 2012.

     

    Per Scholas, a key delivery partner for Barclays Connect with Work programme, provides tuition-free technology skills training and professional development to un- or underemployed individuals. The new location, powered by Barclays, is the third in the New York tri-state area and will provide tech training and professional development to 100 students per year over the next three years – two-thirds of whom will be Newark residents. The inaugural class at the Newark location kicked-off in March with 19 individuals.

    Barclays is proud of its longstanding partnership with Per Scholas, which promotes economic growth and social progress within the communities it serves, and we’re excited to start welcoming the next generation of leaders to the fantastic new training facility in Newark.

    A sustainable and diverse talent pipeline that meets employers’ needs

    In addition to empowering individuals from the local community with professional and technical skills, Per Scholas aims to connect regional businesses with an extensive source of local talent that reaches far beyond traditional recruitment channels. Corporate partners, such as Barclays, require a robust pipeline of highly-skilled tech talent that Per Scholas delivers through its programming.

    Since 2012, Barclays has hired over 50 Per Scholas students as apprentices, interns or full-time hires. Julissa Ortega, a chef turned infrastructure engineer, is one of the Per Scholas graduates now working at Barclays.

    The Newark-based students will serve as a key talent pipeline for Barclays’ new technology and operations campus in Whippany, NJ, which is less than 20 miles away from the new Per Scholas location.
